Layered Jello

Source: Mom

Ingredients:
Jello;
5-6 flavors of jello (small or large depending on the size of pan)
2 pints of sour cream
boiling water
cold water (keep refrigerated or add ice to keep it cold)

Topping:
1/2 pint Heavy Whipping Cream

NOTES:
- Ignore the directions on the jello box.
- The order of jello we do is the order of the original Apple Computer logo (Blue, Purple, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green)
- You can use many small dishes (for individual portions), a 9x13 or larger casserole dish, or even a deeper trifle dish. Keep in mind that the deeper your layers and the less surface area, the longer they will take to set.
- I recommend using either a tablespoon measure to pour subsequent layers on carefully or using a large flat spoon or silicone spatula, so as not to upset the previous layers. If you are using deeper/narrower dishes, you won't be able to fit a spatula in, so I recommend the tablespoon for those dishes and then once you've got a small layer, use a measuring cup to finish adding the rest.

Directions:
1. Get about a quart of water boiling on the stove. Meanwhile, measure 1/3 cup of sour cream into a medium size bowl.
2. When the water is boiling, measure 2 cups into a liquid measuring cup and add the first packet of jello. Whisk until the gelatin has dissolved. Turn off the stove so that the water is no longer boiling. You will use the rest of the water, so do not discard.
3. Once the jello is dissolved, pour half of the jello into the bowl with sour cream. Whisk until the sour cream is dissolved and the jello is an opague color.
4. In the remaining portion, add 3 tablespoons of cold water and put in the refrigerator for 5 minutes to cool (but not set).
5. For the first layer simply pour the clear portion into the dish and put in the refrigerator for 30-60 minutes. (Depends on the dish you are using and how cold your refrigerator is).
6. While the clear layer is setting, pour the rest of the hot water into a large bowl and set the jello / sour cream mixture in the bowl to keep it from cooling too much.
7. After the first layer has set, add the opaque layer carefully (see notes above). Return to the refrigerator to set for 30-60 minutes.
8. Repeat steps 1-7 for additional colors.
9. Add whipping cream as the final layer.
